What is Cézanne's Card?

Cézanne's Card is a studio that paints with an algorithm: Cézanne's language of painting — patches laid side by side, parallel hatching, volume built with warm and cool — turned into a creative tool you can adjust by hand.

  • Unique every time·Every card is derived from a cryptographic seed, so no two are identical.
  • Cézanne-inspired colour·27 palettes distilled from his paintings, from Mont Sainte-Victoire to the Bibémus quarry.
  • Text that belongs·Open-source calligraphy fonts (SIL OFL 1.1) laid over the painting — double-click to edit in place.
  • Export anywhere·PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG, animated GIF, a pasteable HTML snippet, or print to PDF.

How to create a Cézanne-style card

  1. 1

    Choose a palette

Pick one of Cézanne's palettes, pick a mood, or upload a photo for a harmonised palette.

  2. 2

    Shape the layout

Drag on the canvas to pull out the bands, and drag the top-left handle to round the corners. The bottom bar holds stroke density; “Sparsity” opens the three bias sliders.

  3. 3

    Add text

Click “Add text”, then click where it goes — or just double-click the card. Text dropped into a band centres itself.

  4. 4

    Export

Pick a format in the bottom bar: PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG, animated GIF, HTML snippet, or print to PDF.

The colours of Cézanne

Every palette is a distilled impression of a painting or a period — not a filter. The generator first cuts the canvas into colour planes, each with its own key colour; strokes take their colour from the plane, then add tonal modulation and passage between neighbours, so that colour itself does the constructing.

Early
Early: the dark period — deep browns, earth reds and palette-knife impasto.
Impressionist
The impressionist years: painting outdoors beside Pissarro, at L'Estaque.
Constructive
The constructive years: Mont Sainte-Victoire and Cézanne's Card Players, patches set in a geometric order.
Late
Late work: the Bibémus quarry and the garden at Les Lauves.

Meet the real Provence: Mont Sainte-Victoire and his studio

Cézanne hardly left Provence: the mountain east of Aix, the Bibémus quarry, the studio at Les Lauves. This page gathers the mountain, the quarry, Cézanne's studio at Les Lauves and where his paintings live today. Then come back and build a card from the same colours.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cézanne's Card free?

Yes. No account needed — every tool is free to use.

How do I make a Mont Sainte-Victoire painting as a card?

Pick a Provence-related palette (Mont Sainte-Victoire, the Bibémus quarry or Les Lauves), or upload a landscape photo to extract its colours; then export PNG, SVG or an animated GIF.

Can you still visit Cézanne's studio?

Yes. The studio at Les Lauves (Atelier de Cézanne) sits north of Aix-en-Provence and keeps its easel, tools and still-life props as Cézanne left them; our Cézanne's Provence page covers the mountain, the quarry, the studio and where his paintings are.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Reference photos are only used to extract colours on the spot and are never saved.

Why is every card different?

Each card is derived from a random seed driving palette, composition, stroke direction, density, sparsity, texture and glow. The same seed reproduces the same card; fresh seeds are one in four billion.

Which fonts are used for the text?

Open-source fonts under the SIL OFL 1.1 — Long Cang, Liu Jian Mao Cao, Zhi Mang Xing, LXGW WenKai TC and Ma Shan Zheng for Chinese; Playfair Display, Cormorant Garamond, Dancing Script and EB Garamond for Latin.

What can I do with an exported card?

Exports are saved straight to your device — what you do with them is up to you.

Every page in both languages: the studio, Cézanne's Provence, his paintings and the museums that hold them today.
